Brancaster was famous for its siting of the northern-most Roman fort of the Saxon Shore, but is now better known for Brancaster beach, of which the National Trust maintains an interest,

The Roman settlement here named Branodunum. Numerous theories exist as to what the Roman presence would exploited in the area, in particular, the natural harbour that the fort would have been very close to at that time.
