Pathfinder Scheme news
On Tuesday December 1, 2009 the Secretary of State announced the outcome of the coastal change pathfinder scheme. 15 local authorities have been selected as pathfinders to explore new approaches to planning for, and managing, adaptation to coastal change together with their communities, using the £11 million coastal change fund (see www.publications.parliament.uk/pa/cm200910/cmhansrd/cm091201/wmstext/91201m0001.htm#09120133000080).

Coastal Access
Defra has announced that the Marine and Coastal Access Bill received Royal Assent on 12 November 2009, creating the Marine and Coastal Access Act. No other country in the world has successfully introduced a single piece of legislation to protect the marine environment and the Act will create a new marine planning system designed to bring together the conservation, social and economic needs of our seas.

In addition, Natural England issued a press release on 31 July 2009 summarising the results of their audit of coastal access, including links to maps showing where we have good clear access along the coast and also where, although there may be informal access, there is no permanent right of access. Share With Care pilot initiative on sensitive use of the coast launched
The Norfolk Coast is a special place for people as well as wildlife, but how can we make sure the two get on together – that people “share with care”?

For two months during July and August 2009, a pilot initiative aimed at increasing people’s understanding of the sensitivities of birds on the coast, and how to share the coast with them, is taking place on the North Norfolk Heritage Coast. The two main reserves involved are the RSPB’s Titchwell Marsh and the National Trust’s Blakeney Point, with the Norfolk Wildlife Trust’s Holme Dunes reserve also taking part in a more limited way.

The pilot is led by the Wash and North Norfolk Coast European Marine Site Management Scheme , with funding from the Norfolk Coast Partnership and the Sustainable Development Fund for the AONB.

Find out more about the pressures faced by coastal birds and how you can avoid adding to these when you visit the coast by visiting the web site specially set up for this pilot Share With Care
Wirescapes
Removing overhead lines in our most precious landscapes
EDF Energy, the electricity network distribution company for the region, is nearing completion of work on a major scheme to remove overhead wires and poles near Holme-next-the-Sea. This is the second scheme in the Norfolk Coast AONB to be funded through a scheme for protected landscapes agreed by Ofgem, the Government’s electricity regulator, following the smaller scheme near Nelson’s birthplace at Burnham Thorpe in Spring 2007.

Information on public access in the Norfolk Coast AONB
A one stop shop website for access information is under development for the Norfolk Coast AONB and the wider county of Norfolk.

Working with colleagues in the Norfolk county council access team we aim to develop a publicly accessible website carrying all forms of access information. Collation of data on access provided by the Rights of Way network, county roads and lanes, licence footpaths, open access arrangements, agri-environment schemes and other access provided by private and public landowners has been completed.

Much of the data will be ‘live’ ensuring the information is up to date.

It is hoped to make the information accessible on the internet this summer, making Norfolk the first county in the country to provide all access information in one place. It is planned to add further layers of information as the site develops, increasing peoples' enjoyment and understanding of this special place.
