2008-09 Projects and news

2008-09 saw a fourth successful year for the SDF in the Norfolk Coast AONB. A wide variety of projects were supported, each working hard to ensure an environmentally, socially and economically prosperous future for the Area.

Projects ranged from improved access schemes to artist blacksmiths; from educational programmes to land management studies. Some of them are described below.

The Norfolk Ornithologists Association received two grants this year. Firstly they were able to improve access facilities at their Holme Reserve. This will enable more people with reduced mobility to access and enjoy the AONB.

Their second project allowed them to purchase equipment to not only enable them to conduct crucial monitoring at their reserve, but also to undertake demonstration sessions for people in the area, thereby raising awareness of the Norfolk Coast.

Holt Hall Field Studies Centre were able to use their grant to develop the next phase of their Roots and Shoots project (funded in 2007-08).

Their grant with match funding from Easton College went towards the training of their Project Officer which will allow them to deliver land-based vocational courses in North Norfolk. This means that people will have less far to travel to receive such education.

The grant also allowed the Centre to purchase much needed equipment for their expanding volunteer and school groups who look after the Victorian Garden, and an outdoor classroom.

Norfolk Wildlife Trust received just over £2000 to enhance their 2009 Coastwatch survey activities aimed at involving young people, schools & families with wildlife on the Norfolk Coast.

As part of their project they organised outreach visits and field trips for five Norfolk schools allowing students, who may not otherwise have had the opportunity, to learn about and visit the Norfolk Coast.
