2007-08 Projects and news

The third year of the Norfolk Coast Sustainable Development Fund has brought in further projects that promise real benefits to the people and environment of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.

Projects who have currently been offered funding for this year can be seen in the attached table.

Applicant: Wells Harbour Commissioners
Project: North Norfolk Live Shellfish Handling Facility. Communal shellfish handling facility to be built at the east end of Wells harbour quay. Will encourage fishing organisations to work together, improve survival rate for crabs landed and separate fish working area from tourists.
Outcome: £0. Despite every effort by all involved to get this project started and completed with in the 2007/8 year the project has failed to get off the ground. Therefore the £25,000 granted has not been able to be allocated.

Applicant: Sedgeford Primary School
Project: Sedgeford Primary School Vegetable and Fruit Garden in school grounds with children growing and harvesting food for use in their school lunches. Wildflower area and bird boxes installed.
Outcome: £693. This project is up and running very successfully with a seasons produce harvested and a very enthusiastic gardening club established.
Applicant: Norfolk Rural Community Council
Project: Development of a Natural Environment Toolkit. Development of a computer based environmental toolkit to be used by local communities (and potentially further a field as well) in putting together parish plans, community plans etc.
Outcome: £9,000. UEA have completed the work and we will soon be publicising the website address. There is potential for more work on its presentation during 2008.
Applicant: NCC, Nell Seal
Project: Coastal Futures ll, Extent programme offered last year to more schools. Build on last year’s programme by offering greater follow up activities and support back in school. Free training to 12 teachers from 12 schools to show how the AONB can be used to raise achievement and aspirations.
Outcome: £5581. Project has progressed well and was granted an extra £232 to fund website work.

Applicant: Red House Land Trust
Project: Blakeney Lower Quay. The replacement of the old timber quay on the Blakeney waterfront, most of which is currently unusable due to its dilapidated state. It will include disabled and be in a style in keeping with the history of the area.
Outcome: £3667. Project successfully completed.
Applicant: Cambridge University (Zoology Department)
Project: Sustainability of Crab Catching Through Education. University students, having carried out research in the previous year want to make their findings meaningful. They will produce A5 flyers to be distributed for free through local shops in Wells with crabbing equipment. They are aimed at educating children about the crabs and how to make sure they survive being captured and released.
Outcome: £172. Project has been successfully completed and pamphlets distributed to shops. The actual value of the full project is several thousand pounds when all the work that the students have put in is factored into it. Applicant: Sheringham-Plus
Project: Community wardrobe. Continue work on setting up a costume hire business as a social enterprise. Employ a student force person to help set up the business, review business plan, conduct market research, and deliver community training.,
Outcome: £3172.82. Due to staffing difficulties this project came in under budget. However most of the outcomes have been achieved through a combination of the person in post and the efforts of volunteers.
Applicant: The Griffon Area Partnership
Project: Griffon Walks. 3 walks leaflets produced (as part of a series of 3 walk packages). All circular walks are in the Mundesley and Southrepps area and follow quiet lanes and footpaths. Also down loadable. Text aimed at helping people feel more confident to get out and walk, therefore increasing activity, and enjoyment understanding and appreciation of area.
Outcome: £3030. All three brochures completed to a high standard.

Applicant: Holt Hall Field Studies Centre
Project: Roots and Shoots: Growing for the Future! To employ a teacher for two terms to set up and run an education programme focusing on growing/farming/rural studies. The project aims to be holistic in terms of health, wellbeing and sustainability and follows the recommendation of a DEFRA funded scoping study. To do work to bring the Victorian kitchen garden at Holt Hall back into production – organic
Outcome: £12,071: Project going very well. Schools currently involved: Sheringham High, Woodfields, Sidestrand, Taverham High, Stalham High. Also Holt Youth Project. Great interest from a range of organisations in seeing this project developed further.
(£1200 extra funds allocated to project to purchase further equipment. Match funding is in place for this at 50%)

Applicant: RSPB, Steve Jones
Project: North Norfolk Coast Birds and Recreation Study , A scoping study to summarise evidence on the sensitivity of coastal bird species to recreational disturbance.
Outcome: £500. Project successfully completed.
