Fruit Growing:
How many varieties of plum or apple can you name?
We could all recall most of the varieties that we regularly see in the shops with relative ease, Granny Smith apples or Conference pears.
But did you know there is a Norfolk Coleman, Norfolk Royal Russet and a Norfolk Beauty apple?
Have you ever heard of Annaspath or Kirkes Blue plums or Violet, Count Althans or Dennistons gages?

What you can do
*Ask your shopkeeper and supermarket to stock local varieties.
*Ask your local garden centre to stock old or heritage varieties of seed and plants.
*Take an allotment and grow some of your own fruit and vegetables.
*Learn the techniques of saving the seed from your own plants.
*Plant a local variety of apple tree in your back garden.
*If you have a small garden there are even varieties available that will not grow too big.
